Japan's first manga cultural facility with a collection of 300,000 items

The Kyoto International Manga Museum is situated at the center of Kyoto in Karasuma Oike. The museum opened in 2006 by reusing the building of a closed-down elementary school. With an extensive collection of 300,000 manga materials from historical to foreign works, it is both a library and a fun museum of Japanese manga culture, playing a vital role as a purveyor of the Japanese culture and drawing attention from all over the world.

Experience Japanese scents at Kunjyukan

A little north of the Manga Museum is the Kunjyukan, a facility opened in 2018 by Shoeido, a long-established incense maker with more than 300 years of history in Kyoto, to exhibit and experience Japanese fragrances. The first thing that comes into view is three large boxes hanging from the ceiling, each filled with different types of fragrance. Insert your whole head in the boxes, and experience the fragrances with your entire body. There are also galleries and exhibitions related to Japanese fragrances. The facility is connected to Shoeido’s Kyoto main store, so you can also look for souvenirs.

ShinPuhKan

Located south of the Manga Museum, ShinPuhKan is a commercial facility renovated in June 2020 making use of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Office building and bringing a breath of fresh new air to Kyoto. Based on the concept of “fusion of tradition and innovation,” there are 20 stores, a corridor that runs from east to west and a courtyard full of nature giving a very open feeling. It is also directly connected to the subway for convenient access.
