Shiobara Onsen, a treasure trove of seven-colored hot springs with over 1,200 years of history
Said to be discovered in 806, Shiobara Onsen has a long and rich history of more than 1,200 years as a spa town and still attracts many visitors today. It is often called a “treasure trove of hot springs” because of the more than 150 sources of hot spring water in six types of spring quality, with seven-colored waters gushing out at a rate of approximately 10,000 liters per minute. In addition, the various walking courses along the mountain stream and the refreshing natural environment make the area a popular summer resort as well. With ski resorts and a famous suspension bridge also nearby, Shiobara Onsen offers a host of fun activities and places to explore.
Toteyaki
"Toteyaki" is a local specialty food of Shiobara Onsen. In ancient times, stagecoaches called Tote horse carriages were running through the Shiobara Onsen village. Formed like the trumpet-shaped horn of these carriages, toteyaki is a hand-held snack similar to crepes. Nasu Shiobara-produced milk and eggs are used to make the castella-like sponge cake, and the fillings inside vary depending on the shop, with 12 different kinds in all. Taste and compare all the different flavors of toteyaki while exploring the hot spring resort.
