Water Efficiency Management

Awareness of the Issues

Water is indispensable for plants and animals on the earth and for our daily lives.
On the other hand, the natural environment surrounding water, such as lakes, rivers, wetlands, forests, and grasslands in their watersheds, is deteriorating and decreasing significantly in many parts of the world.
The primary causes are excessive use of water resources by agriculture and industry, resulting pollution, and development activities such as flood control works and large-scale dam construction. While there are few activities directly attributable to the aviation industry, the ANA Group recognizes the importance of conducting business activities that take into consideration the reduction of "water" consumption and will contribute to the reduction of water risk by reducing water consumption and managing water quality, based on our biodiversity and procurement policies as well as our environmental policy.

Policy

We consider environmental issues important in our business and promote initiatives to manage and reduce water consumption through our business operations per our policies.

Risk Assessment Due to Water Resource Depletion

Water depletion threatens business operations for the ANA Group, whose core business is aviation. Operational safety may be lost due to inaccurate maintenance of aircraft and engine water washing. This could lead to a loss of trust among stakeholders. Water depletion could lead to drought on the land, making it difficult for crops to grow, which could affect in-flight catering itself. In addition, in-flight meal management will also lose the trust of stakeholders due to poor sanitation of ingredients and food products. Furthermore, it will also affect the hygiene management of employees.

Opportunities by Maintaining and Restoring Water Resources

Reducing water consumption leads to lower business costs. In addition, by securing water resources, the growth of crops will be protected. This leads to a stable supply of foodstuffs for in-flight meal service.
On the other hand, the use of water resources enables aircraft maintenance to maintain accuracy, thereby protecting operational safety. As a result, companies can gain the trust of their stakeholders and improve their bottom line.

Scope of Management

Water use occurs at all ANA Group business sites. We manage water usage at approximately 250 sites to reduce consumption

Initiatives to Reduce Water Consumption

The ANA Group has created "ANA Group's energy management standards" based on various laws and regulations, such as the Energy Conservation Law, and implements management, analysis, and evaluation using the water usage management system "GreenGlobeX (GGX)." At its own facilities, the group is implementing measures to reduce water usage, such as reusing leftover water from aircraft and treated kitchen wastewater (reclaimed water). In aircraft maintenance, the company is reducing water usage by minimizing the use of cleaning agents (cleaning engine parts with ultra-high-pressure water) and taking measures to mitigate the impact of wastewater on water quality.

ANA Catering Services Co., Ltd. (ANAC)

ANA Catering Service (ANAC) is responsible for manufacturing and preparing in-flight meals for the ANA Group.ANAC accounts for 30% of the water consumption of the ANA Group's approximately 250 business locations, and its efforts to reduce water consumption play an important role.In accordance with the ANA Group's energy management standards, which were created based on environmental regulations such as the Energy Conservation Law, ANAC implements efficient management of energy, water, and waste.

Water Management Program

  1. (1) Performance and progress management by GreenGlobeX (GGX) (monitor and evaluate the situation)
  2. (2) Reduction of water use
    • Adoption of water-saving valves
    • The amount of water used daily is managed, and the effectiveness of the equipment is measured. Based on the results of these measurements, a plan for updating the equipment is drawn up when updating or introducing new water-using equipment such as washing machines.
    • Set water consumption reduction targets for each plant (Kawasaki and Narita). Conduct performance management and analysis to set targets for the next fiscal year.
  3. (3) Ensure wastewater meets legal and other standards and install detoxification equipment to control and improve the wastewater quality.
    • Conduct monthly internal audits
  4. (4) Setting Targets
Based on the analysis in (1) and (2), set annual targets for each plant considering the previous year's results and the business environment.
Targets
Plant Object Target
Kawasaki Plant Water consumption 0.79L/meal
Narita Plant Well water consumption 1.3 t/flight
  1. (5) Water Reuse
Drain water from air conditioners is reused and sprayed to prevent the high temperatures of factory folding roofs and air conditioner outdoor units.
