Geibi Gorge (Geibikei)

Enjoy a beautiful boat trip down a gorge selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan

Located in Ichinoseki City in Iwate Prefecture, Geibi Gorge (Geibikei) was formed by the erosion of limestone layers which created steep cliffs of more than 50 meters in height towering on either side of the river for about two kilometers. The beautiful gorge has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument and counted as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. Be sure to take a leisurely boat ride down the gorge pushed along with a pole by a boatman. The seasonal natural beauty and fanciful rock formations of the gorge can be enjoyed along the way.

Take in the spectacular views of the gorge from the boat

Geibi Gorge is lined with fanciful rock formations. You can also view the rock shaped like a lion's nose, for which the gorge is named. The flow of the river is slow, while the boatman sings "Geibi Oiwake," a traditional local song, as he pushes the boat with a pole. The gorge is particularly beautiful in spring with wisteria flowers in bloom as well as with lush greenery in summer. In the wintertime, a snowy wonderland resembling a monochrome ink painting unfolds.
