Train Tour on Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka! Ride Steam Locomotives and the Ikawa Line (Southern Alps Abt Line)
The Oigawa Railway runs through Shizuoka Prefecture. If you’re visiting for sightseeing, you should definitely try riding steam locomotives and the Ikawa Line (Southern Alps Abt Line). Steam locomotives run almost every day, providing for the perfect trip. They are operated over 300 days a year, the most in all Japan. The Ikawa Line (Southern Alps Abt Line) is full of character, with trains so small you’ll feel like you’re going to bang your head on the ceiling.
Both the steam locomotives of Oigawa Railway and Ikawa Line (Southern Alps Abt Line) offer a view of calm, abundant natural scenery along the Oi River. Enjoy train travel to the max - as you look out the window, successive scenes of beautiful gorges will unravel right before your very eyes.
These are steam locomotives that operate between Shin-Kanaya and Senzu. The locomotives were manufactured between 1930 and 1942. The passenger carriages were also made in the 1930s and 1940s, making them reminiscent of Japan’s Showa period. On the steam locomotives of Oigawa Railway, you can get a taste of the Showa period - it’ll no longer feel like the distant past!
The Ikawa Line (Southern Alps Abt Line) connects Senzu to Ikawa, weaving through the gorges along the Oi River. Japan’s only Abt railway, the line is full of character. The line’s Oku-Oi Kojo Station looks just as if it’s floating on the water of the reservoir and is gaining popularity as a sacred spot for lovers. The railway’s bridges include the Seki-no-Sawa Bridge, which boasts the tallest height from a riverbed in all of Japan. Its dazzling height was used to conquer the steep slopes of the area.
There are few modern trains in Japan with windows that can be opened. However, you can open the windows on both the steam locomotives and the Ikawa Line. You’ll get a better view if you open the window - it’ll feel just as if you can reach out and touch the scenery! As long as it’s not the cold season, try opening the window. Your window is for you, and only you, to enjoy. Be careful not to lean too far out of the window, though.
