Otaru Canal

Nostalgic canal preserving the old-world scenery of Hokkaido
Lined with masonry warehouses, Otaru Canal is photogenic from every angle.
Completed in 1923, the canal was constructed for small ships transporting cargo. Now that it’s no longer used for its original purpose, the canal has become a popular tourist destination with walkways for visitors.
In the evening, enjoy a different side to the scenery from the daytime as the gas lamps light up, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
Scenic stroll in every season
Stretching 1,140 meters, walking from one end to the other along the Otaru Canal takes around 20 minutes. Because it was developed by coastal reclamation, the canal is shaped in a gentle curve rather than straight. The scenery features cherry blossoms in the spring, a cool breeze in the summer and colorful leaves in the autumn, followed by entrancing snowscapes in the winter. While exploring the surrounding area, visit the many cafes and restaurants repurposed from the antiquated masonry warehouses and buildings.
Otaru Canal Cruise
Take a 40-minute leisurely cruise along the canal guided by the boat captain, and discover its many faces that transform with the season and time of day. The two types of cruises, day and night, each offer different ways of enjoying the remarkable view of Otaru from the gently rocking boat.
The Blue Canal and Otaru Snow Light Path
As evening descends, the 63 gas lamps along the canal light up, and warehouses are illuminated, transforming the atmosphere from daytime to an enchanting nighttime scene. Illumination events are also held every winter, including the Blue Canal casting a romantic blue light on the waters and the Otaru Snow Light Path adorned with the soft glow of candlelight. Enjoy the spectacular views from the bridges and walkways, or gaze at the scenery from the waters on the canal cruise for an even more special moment.
