Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Conservation Center (Fujisato) and Shirakami Mountain Range

Save to List

A world-class size primeval beech forest that has never been exploited. Have an overwhelming experience of being in a completely natural environment without any steel towers!

This virgin beech forest, the largest of its kind in Japan, is part of the Shirakami mountain range, which is a massive 130,000-hectare area extended over Aomori and Akita prefectures and was listed as UNESCO's World Heritage site in 1993. The forest has always maintained its natural eco-system without being exploited, as home to a diversity of wild fauna and flora, such as beech trees, golden eagles and black woodpeckers.

Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Conservation Center (Fujisato)

Located in the Fujisato area, this center serves as a visitor center of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage site. It exhibits informational materials about the site, and its nature advisors help with any questions about the forest in the area. This is also the starting point of its eco-tourism tour, which offers opportunities to learn about the site from geographical and environmental viewpoints.

Akita Shirakami Experience Center

This center is a facility with ocean-view accommodations. It offers a variety of experience-based programs featuring the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range and the Japan Sea, directly adjacent to the center. These programs include trekking in the range, sea kayaking, fishing, beach exploration and bread-making using local ingredients.
