Hatsumode: Japan's Winter Tradition

Winter is the time to experience Japan’s important cultural events. The custom of Hatsumode, literally “first prayer”, is a person’s first visit of the year to a temple or shrine. While New Year’s Day tends to be the most popular day, New Year shrine visits are common throughout the first week of January, as people pray for health and happiness in the coming year. Enjoy the tradition by collecting different omamori (good luck amulets) and goshuin (unique temple seals) or opening an omikuji (fortune slip). Or write your wish upon an ema (wooden plaque) and hang it among the others in the shrine. With the clear skies and fresh air of winter, it’s the perfect time to visit Japan and experience one of its most culturally rich traditions.

Shrine Visit Tips

Best enjoy your New Year shrine visit by knowing the etiquette of Hatsumode beforehand. Bow before entering through the torii gate, then ladle water from temizuya (water basin) to purify your mind and body. Then toss a coin and bow twice, clap twice, pray, and bow again.

Yutoku Inari: Recommended New Year Shrine

Yutoku Inari Shrine in Kashima City in Saga is overflowing with worshippers during the Japanese New Year. Stone steps under vermillion torii gates lead you to the hilltop inner sanctuary, while the vast grounds include idyllic walking trails, a Japanese garden, and museum.
