Chatsubomigoke Moss Park
2,000 square meters of natural velvet and green carpet in Chatsubomigoke Moss Park
Chatsubomigoke Moss Park is located about 10 kilometers north of Kusatsu Onsen, a famous hot spring resort in Gunma Prefecture. Because there used to be iron ore deposits in the area, a strong acidic mineral spring that reaches levels of PH 2.8 gushes out from the hollow (popular name: Anajigoku, the hearth of hell) that was formed by mining. It is the perfect condition for Chatsubomigoke moss, which inhabits only acidic waters. It is rare that Chatsubomigoke moss grows so extensively in nature, and this is the only park on the Honshu main island of Japan with such vegetation.
Yoshigadaira Wetlands
The wetlands, rivers, and lakes formed by the volcanic activities of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, including Chatubomigoke Moss Park, are collectively called the Yoshigadaira Wetlands. Take a step in from the stark grasslands of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, and enter a lush green wetland, home to one of the world’s most valuable ecosystems such as cotton grasses and other alpine plants, and Japanese serows designated as special natural monuments. The rare ecosystem of Chatsubomigoke Moss Park was also recognized as a natural monument of Japan in 2017.
