Birthplace of Japanese surfing

Senoshi, or riding waves on a single piece of board, is a traditional marine sport of Yunohama that has even been documented in the Edo period (1603-1868), essentially much like surfing today. Japan's first surfing started here on Yunohama Beach. Subsequently, in 1900, the so-called body surfing was born, in which people ride waves with their bodies without using boards. A monument commemorating the "Birthplace of Japanese Surfing" stands on the beach of Yunohama.

Yunohama Beach

Yunohama Beach, one of the largest swimming beaches in the Tohoku region, is located at the southern tip of the Shonai Sand Dunes and extends along the long coastline of the hot spring town. The endless white sandy beach, the shallow ocean and the calm Sea of Japan in the summer all make this an enjoyable destination for families. Various marine activities are available including sea kayaking, surfing and Japan's first official beach slackline. A clam-digging area for children in elementary school and under is also a great fun spot. The Yunohama Mini Fireworks, which starts from the end of July and held every day, is small in scale but quite powerful.

Yunohama Onsen Kameya

Founded in 1813, Yunohama Onsen Kameya is named after a legend that a turtle discovered the hot spring. It is a representative hot spring inn of Yunohama that incorporates modern aspects while remaining true to traditions. The view facing the horizon of the Sea of Japan offers splendid scenery for every season. Enjoy delicious meals prepared with the rich produce from the Shonai region and fresh catches from the Sea of Japan, and feel the abundant natural blessings of Yamagata's Shonai region.
