Experience baking by hand and discover the secret to the deliciousness of Oranda Senbei made from Shonai rice
A local favorite called Yamagata's soul food, Oranda Senbei rice crackers are a product of Sakata Beika Co., Ltd., which specializes in snacks made from rice made in the Shonai region in Yamagata Prefecture. At the Oranda Senbei Factory in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, visitors can tour the factory and experience making the rice crackers by hand.
Take a tour of the long-shaped factory and watch the rice cracker manufacturing process
The total length of the Oranda Senbei Factory is 545 meters. Located along the Mogami River in Sakata, the factory welcomes guests with the illustration of Sakata Beika's mascot Oranda-chan. Here, you can observe the entire process of rice cracker manufacturing through the windows, from dough making to baking and packaging. You can even taste the rice crackers made right in front of your eyes. During the tour, stop by the area where you to learn about rice and Oranda Senbei. Another must-see is the trick art of Oranda-chan, a great photo spot during the factory tour.
Bake your own rice crackers
Experience hand-baking your own rice crackers on the second floor of the Oranda Senbei Factory. Savor freshly baked toasty rice crackers right after baking the rice cracker dough and coating them with soy sauce (400 yen/about 30 minutes). Another recommendation is the rice cracker seasoning experience (600 yen/about 10 minutes). In addition to the standard flavor, try the various flavors of Oranda Senbei such as cheese, yuzu kosho (pepper), wasabi, sakura ebi (shrimp), kelp salt and grilled corn. Choose two flavors from around 15 flavoring powders, shake it well and enjoy!
Delicious sweets at the café
At the "cafe de ola" located in a corner of the factory, you can enjoy not just rice crackers but also delicious sweets and light meals only available here, including pancakes made with select rice flour, milk soft-serve ice cream, curry and quiche. Relax in the quaint Shonai atmosphere as you gaze at the Mogami River and Mount Chokai from the cafe window.
