Sagawa Art Museum

Indulge in the artistic atmosphere in a museum by Lake Biwa existing in perfect harmony with nature
Located in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, Sagawa Art Museum overlooks Lake Biwa with a view toward Mount Hiei and Mount Hira. In the three mystifying buildings floating on the vast grounds of the water garden, masterpiece collections of Japanese art are housed, such as works of eminent Japanese-style art painter Ikuo Hirayama, sculptor Churyo Sato and ceramic artist Kichizaemon Raku. The museum shows us different faces in the changing seasons and will temp you to visit many times.
Tea house designed by Kichizaemon Raku
The tea house attached to the Raku Kichizaemon Pavilion was designed by Raku himself. Tea ceremonies are held and open to anyone, offering opportunities for visitors who are not familiar with the art of tea to get acquainted. The house consists of a small room that is submerged in water and a hall floating in the water, and the floor height of the hall is almost the same level as the surface of the water in the garden. It is an effective expression of Raku's idea to sit at the same level as the surface of the water, suggesting that humans must live on the same level as nature.
