Matsue Castle

Discover tea ceremony and Japanese culture in a historic castle town with samurai residences and other traces of the Edo Period.
The Matsue Castle Tower
This tower is one of the 12 remaining original castle towers in Japan. If the Himeji Castle is nicknamed the "White Heron Castle", Matsue Castle is called the "Plover Castle" for its strong structure. From its top you can admire the view of Matsue city and Lake Shinji. In spring, its beautiful grounds fill with 200 cherry blossoms.
The Charm of a Castle Town
Stroll around the castle grounds or take a boat cruise of the surrounding moat and you'll witness the atmosphere of a castle town. During certain periods the castle is also lit up at night, making for a beautiful scenery.
While You're Visiting
Matsue has a strong tea culture that can be enjoyed here as well. While vising the castle you can stop at one of the many tea houses and try matcha, made popular here by Matsue's feudal lord. Sencha green tea is normally used in everyday life in Japan, however here in Matsue, people regularly consume matcha instead.
