Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine and Koinoki Shrine

Appreciated as the god of good matches and love, Koinoki Shrine is scattered with its heart crest, including “ema” votive wooden plaques, love fortune-telling “omikuji” paper strips and heart-shaped porcelain amulets.

Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine

Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, the god of academics. Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine is one of the two largest Tenmangu shrines in the Kyushu region, which boasts a beautiful landscape that reflects the influence of the architecture of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. A large number of visitors come to offer prayers or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the sacred grounds where subordinate shrines and many cultural properties can be found. The Sentomyo Festival and Chigo Furyu Festival that take place at Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine have been designated as intangible folk cultural properties of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Koinoki Shrine

Because Koinoki Shrine is the only shrine in Japan dedicated to the god of love “Koi-no-Mikoto,” it is a very popular destination in Fukuoka attracting a great number of visitors of all ages and genders every day who come to pray for luck in love and happiness. It fascinates visitors with its grounds full of hearts, including the torii gate decorated with 10 hearts; the “koi-sando,” or the heart-filled pathway that leads worshippers to the shrine; love fortune-telling paper strips; votive wooden plaques; and heart-shaped porcelain amulets.
