Kishiwada Danjiri Kaikan

Experience the exciting Danjiri Festival all year

The Kishiwada Danjiri Festival has a history of 300 years, and has been passed down and cultivated with pride by the people of Kishiwada. The dynamic towing of Danjiri floats is well known not just in Japan but also as a world-class festival. Danjiri Kaikan is a museum where you can experience the Danjiri Festival not only during the festival but throughout the year. There is much to see such as the reproduction of the festival through powerful videos and sounds, elaborate sculptures and a hands-on festival experience area.

Travel back in time to the castle town in the Edo period

The museum’s exterior fully incorporates the atmosphere of the old castle town as if you have time-traveled into the Edo period (1603-1868), with huge lanterns at the gate welcoming visitors. Inside, the Kishu Kaido Road of that time is reproduced, lined with traditional buildings. Here, you can get up and close with displays of the oldest Kishiwada-type Danjiri float in existence, as well as antique Danjiri floats made in the Edo and Meiji periods (1868-1912), and observe that the theme, craftsmanship and expression of sculpture differ depending on the period it was made. In addition, the impressive large multi-vision video near the entrance is a must-see.

Authentic experience of the festival

In this area, you can experience being a daikugata, the star of the parade who energetically dances on the big roof of the Danjiri float while holding fans in both hands and shouting instructions, and the narimono, the noisemaker playing large and small drums and a gong to synchronize the float pullers. There is also the 3D Danjiri Vision, which shows the parade using the latest 3D audiovisual technologies, making you feel as if you are actually participating in the festival. The festive happi coats decorating the walls will fuel your celebratory mood.
