Kurokabe Square

Stylish shops and cafes provide a retrospective townscape in the historical city of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture
Kurokabe Square is at the center of Nagahama tourism, a castle city known for its 16th-century historical architecture. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the city prospered as a station town on the Hokkoku Kaido Road. Kurokabe Square utilizes the retrospective townscape and now bustles with stylish restaurants and shops, as well as glass workshop studios.
Hikiyama Festival, an Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO
An annual event at Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine for over 400 years, the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival is held from April 9 to 17 every year and is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The Hikiyama Museum in Kurokabe Square is home to the actual Hikiyama floats used in the festival, and these are considered to be a moving museum and decorated with glittering traditional ornaments. The highlight of the festival is the children's kabuki, which is a must-see experience as it provides a unique opportunity for the children who engage in the serious rehearsals necessary for the show to put on the performance of their young lives.
