Magical Lantern Festivals Light Up Japan
Typically held in August throughout Japan, dark rivers are illuminated with the warm glow of paper lanterns during the Toro Nagashi festival. During this festival, when the spirits of one’s ancestors briefly return home, the lanterns help guide them back to the afterlife. After writing their personal thoughts and messages of peace on the lanterns, people set them afloat in a solemn procession over bodies of water. One of the popular events on Japan’s calendar, these Japanese lantern festivals also have a strong community connection. Reflecting the local culture and climate, they may serve as a memorial honoring specific events or people. Why not learn about Japanese culture by partaking in one of these traditional lantern festivals held each year around the country?

Guiding the Spirits of Loved Ones Home
Japan’s Toro Nagashi festival sees many events held in the first half of August, when it is believed that ancestors return home for a brief visit. Floating candle-lit toro (paper lanterns) down the river, people safely guide the spirits of loved ones back to the afterlife, while also praying for world peace.

Hiroshima Shines with Lanterns of Peace
A lantern ceremony will be held in early August to pray for peace when the city holds its annual Toro Nagashi festival. A splendid display arises from the park as colorful lanterns bearing messages of peace travel down the Motoyasu River.

The Must-Try Local Food of Hiroshima
