Shiunzan Nakayama-dera Temple

Reconstructed by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1646, this prestigious double gate with its traditional tiled roof is a cultural asset designated by Hyogo Prefecture. It is also called Bokairou (ocean view building) and was known to be able to see the faraway ocean from there. Located at the precinct entrance, the gate is a pathway for those who seek enlightenment, and at the same time, wards off bad spirits from entering the grounds. Various gods are enshrined inside to protect this temple gate. In addition, many straw sandals are dedicated around Nio guardian statues to wish for leg and back muscles to stay strong.

Named Shoryuto (blue dragon pagoda), the blue-colored, five-storied pagoda is rarely seen in Japan. Rebuilt in 2017 and shining beautifully, the blue represents the wisdom of Buddha and the Shoryu dragon who controls the east among the four gods that represent the four cardinal directions. The basement enshrines Buddha's Shari (remains of a saint) brought back from a temple in Nepal. In the hall, the principle object of worship, Gautama Siddhartha, is surrounded by about 700 statues of Rakan (saints who attained spiritual enlightenment), who are his disciples.
