Isobe Onsen

A historic hot spring resort in Gunma Prefecture
The sign that was used in a 1600s map to indicate the location of Isobe Onsen has now become the Japanese map symbol to represent onsen (hot spring). The resort is located along the clear stream of the Usui River with a spectacular view of beautiful Mount Myogi. Isobe Onsen has been loved by many writers, artists, and financiers as a quiet summer retreat. Enjoy the serene atmosphere as well as the beautiful fresh greenery and red foliage.
Isobe senbei, a specialty of Isobe Onsen
Isobe senbei is a sweet cracker baked by adding mineral spring water and sugar to flour. The dough rises by the carbon dioxide contained in the mineral spring water and has a subtle sweetness. At the Isobe Hot Spring Hall, you can receive a stamp card and tickets to exchange with senbei at shops around town. Explore the resort town and collect all the stamps to receive a gift.
June to September is sweetfish season
Another specialty of Isobe Onsen is sweetfish, a summer staple of Japan. Visitors can savor fresh sweetfish dishes while gazing at the sparkling Usui River and the greenery along the riverside. Enjoy a variety of menus such as grilled dishes and sashimi of freshly caught sweetfish, as well as deep-fried young sweetfish.
