Poppies in the Sky

"Tastes of JAPAN by ANA" is a regional vitalization project that collaborates with the different prefectures in Japan to present the Land of the Rising Sun in all of its diverse glory.
Poppies bloom in the sky against the backdrop of the mountains of Chichibu
During early summer, over 1.5 million blossoms of bright red poppies cover a vast 5-hectare field at an elevation of 500 meters. Called "Poppies in the Sky" for its breathtaking scenery of the stunningly beautiful contrast of a clear blue sky, red poppies blooming and green mountains is a sight that can only be seen in this location.
Bright red Shirley poppies blooming in the field
The poppies grown at the Poppies in the Sky venue are the Shirley poppy variety, which often symbolizes the foresight of love, kindness, and liveliness. The flowers bloom around mid-May to early June every year, with colors ranging from red to pink and white.
Explore the poppy field
The Poppies in the Sky site began in 2006 when the flowers were planted in the grassland of Sainokuni Fureai Farm in the Chichibu Highland Farm of Saitama Prefecture. Every fall, local elementary school students and volunteers plant the Shirley poppy seeds and grow them with loving care. The sight of poppies blooming across the sloping hills is beautiful both from above or below. Our recommendation is looking up at the flowers from the bottom of the slope. Take a stroll on the walkway and compare the stunning views from every angle.
Enjoy local Chichibu cuisine
The Poppies in the Sky venue also offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the specialties of Chichibu at various food stalls, including Miso Potatoes and the crepe-like Tarashi-yaki. You can also taste the deliciously rich soft-serve ice cream at the Milk House in Sainokuni Fureai Farm, and Sainokuni Moo-moo House offers dairy product production experiences such as making butter and ice cream.
