Roadside Station Chokai Furatto
Enjoy an on-the-spot tasting of natural rock oysters, Yamagata's summer delicacy
Yuza is a coastal town in northern Yamagata Prefecture. At the Roadside Station Chokai Furatto located along National Route 7, enjoy the town's abundant nature and specialties all in one place, such as the restaurant serving local seafood and mountain produce; direct sales of farm products and fresh fish; and shops offering regional specialties.
Taste fresh seasonal seafood directly from the sea
Buy fresh seasonal fish and marine products from the lively local fishers' wives. Follow the mouthwatering smell of Gingarei (black halibut) hot off the grill, popular year-round! Beginning with Sakura-masu (trout) in the spring, long lines form for the natural rock oysters, a summer delicacy of Shonaihama Beach, followed by fresh run salmon in the fall, then warm soup brimming with Kandara (winter codfish) containing plenty of fat from the harsh cold weather. Enjoy the many delicious flavors of Shonaihama for every season.
Natural rock oysters, the "milk of the sea" rich in minerals
Summer is the prime season for rock oysters in the Fukura area of Yuza at the foothills of Mount Chokai. Mineral-rich subsoil waters from primeval beech forests bubble into the seas of Fukura with plentiful planktons, which in turn nurtures the plump oysters. Also, because the water temperature remains cool, the oysters grow slowly over four to ten years, creating their delicious fine texture. Enjoy the springy texture and rich flavor of the rock oysters that can only be tasted here at Yuza.
Visit the direct sale shop for fresh mountain and farm produce
Choose from an array of fresh vegetables and fruits, including Shonai melons and paprika in the summer, grown with much care by local farmers. The freshly picked seasonal vegetables and fruits are all raised taking advantage of Yuza's rich landscape surrounded by mountains, farmlands, and sand dunes. Take in all that the Shonai region has to offer in this delectable food capital.
