City Information on Okinawa Prefecture

Okinawa prefecture is the southernmost prefecture in Japan with a population of 1,458,839 (as of October 1, 2020) and consists of about 360 large and small islands. The main island of Okinawa and the remote islands around it are the Okinawa Islands, the Kerama Islands centered on Tokashiki Island and Zamami Island, the Miyako Islands around Miyako Island, and the Yaeyama Islands and Senkaku Islands centered on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island. Okinawa is spread out over a vast area in which there are many different cultures and histories. The aquarium reproduces the beautiful sea of Okinawa and is a must-visit place when you come to Okinawa. Shurijo Castle is the royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom that prospered for about 450 years from the end of the 14th century. The vermilion building shines in the blue sky of Okinawa and has a very beautiful appearance (six buildings including the Main Hall were destroyed in a fire on October 31, 2019 and reconstruction is being planned). Also, if you want to experience the traditional culture of Okinawa, you must visit Ryukyu Mura (village).
