Kyushu Region is the farthest southwesternmost of the four main islands of Japan. The region is also widely known as the kingdom of Hot Springs, and is home to the well-known resorts of Beppu, Kurokawa and Yufuin. You can enjoy quality water and breathtaking scenery.
Fukuoka Prefecture, located in northern Kyushu, is Japan's gateway to the rest of Asia. It is also one of Japan's havens for food lovers, where you can enjoy fresh seafood, motsu-nabe hot pot and many more dishes.
Saga Prefecture has long been known as home to traditional ceramics, including Karatsu, Imari and Arita. It is also filled with rich nature that offers fascinating views, such as the caves of Nanatsugama, a stunning natural monument.
Nagasaki Prefecture is where international trade took place during Japan's period of isolation, and people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures came and went. Here you can see a number of exotic and historic islands and buildings, including Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island"), a World Heritage Site.
Kumamoto has a number of popular tourist destinations, such as Kumamoto Castle (one of the three premier castles in Japan) and Mt. Aso (one of the largest calderas in the world). It is also well-known for spring water that wells up in a rich natural environment.
Oita, located along the coast of Kyushu, is considered Japan's top onsen (hot spring) prefecture, boasting the largest number of springs and the largest volume of hot water produced. The 1,584-meter Mt. Yufu in Yufuin is also called "Bungo Fuji (The Mt. Fuji of Oita)" for its beautiful appearance.
Miyazaki Prefecture is home to mythology, where ancient myths and traditions are preserved. It offers a number of popular places to explore history and culture, including Takachiho Gorge (a famous spiritual "power spot") and Saitobaru Burial Mounds, blanketed with blooming flowers.
Kagoshima is the southernmost prefecture in Kyushu. The small islands in the southwestern part of the prefecture are quite warm and surrounded by rich nature. Popular destinations in Kagoshima include Sakurajima and Amami Oshima. The World Heritage Yakushima is known as home to wild animals.

Yanagawa River Cruise
The origins of Yanagawa, a castle town of 109,000-koku (a koku is a measure of rice that was used to indicate the degree of power of a fiefdom in feudal Japan), are believed to lie in a castle built by the Kamachi Clan, which ruled Yanagawa from the Kamakura Period (1185 - 1333) and into the Sengoku, or Warring States, Period (c. 1467 - c. 1600). However, Yanagawa Castle was not built in earnest until the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). The street grids and moat grids of the town are almost exactly as they were during the Edo Period, to the extent that it is said that you could walk the streets using a 300-year-old map of the town. Explore the moats and roam the streets of the town as you enjoy the streetscapes of the Edo Period. A highlight of Yanagawa is the river cruise. Listen to the boatman's explanations of the sights and his boat songs as you cruise for about 4 kilometers through the moats for about an hour and ten minutes. There are more than 200 of these boats, called donko-bune, so you can see them plying the waters from almost any vantage point in the town. You might even see a boatman washing his donko-bune.

Shimoda Onsen
Shimoda Onsen is located just inland from the west coast of Amakusa, an area famous for its beautiful sunsets. The water in the hot spring baths is sourced entirely from the source spring and is said to be beneficial for healing cuts and for recovery from exhaustion. It has a long history, with the first hot spring baths believed to have appeared here some 750 years ago. There is also a legend that the spring burst forth from a spot where an injured egret was soothing its wounds.

Yachiyoza
The Yachiyoza playhouse was built in 1910. Once open, it was used for various types of shows, entertaining audiences in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, but fell into decline as television became more popular. Unama Jizoson
Pass under the Niou Gate of Zenchoji Temple and climb the long, 365-step stone stairway to the peak of Mount Tetsushiro. The Unama Jizoson, a bodhisattva statue, enshrined here is said to be the work of the eminent Buddhist priest, Gyoki, who bowed in prayer three times each time he wielded his carving knife. Legend has it that Shogan, a priest of the Tendai school of Buddhism, who visited the Hyuga trail at the end of the Heian Period (794 - 1185), originally enshrined this sacred Buddhist statue as the main object of worship in a temple he founded in the Ichigi area of the Obara District, and that it was later relocated to the Jizo Hall on Mount Tetsushiro.

Nishi-no-Shosoin
Nishi-no-Shosoin, in the Nango District, is a faithful reproduction of Nara's Shosoin treasure house, built with 400-to-500-year-old Japan hinoki cypress trees. Its construction was based on the original drawings of Shosoin, whose removal from Shosoin's premises has always been forbidden. This was made possible with the cooperation of the Imperial Household Agency, the scientific assistance of the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, and the special permission of the Construction Minister at the time.

Tashiro Shrine
Tashiro Shrine is located in the Tashiro area in the center of Saigo, Misato. The shrine is widely known for the Onda Festival, which takes place in July each year. The shrine's festival calendar, of which the Onda Festival is the central focus, begins with the Spring Festival on the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar, in which peach blossoms and diamond-shaped mochi rice cakes are offered up to the gods, and ends on the final day of the Grand Festival in late November. On that day, a purification ritual is held in which the rice harvest is offered up to Kamado-gami, the Kitchen God. These are important agricultural rites that richly convey this region's ancient rice culture.

The lord of the Omura Clan most connected to Omura Sushi was Omura Sumikore, the 16th lord of the clan. The 19th lord, Omura Yoshiaki, built Kushima Castle in 1599. Hasami is known as a pottery town, and the area of Nakaoyama has a particularly high concentration of potteries. The village features many nostalgic scenes of yesteryear, including one of the world's largest climbing kilns, which made mass production of ceramics possible in the Edo Period (1603 - 1868), brick chimneystacks, and back alleyways. Hinoe Castle Ruins
The Hinoe Castle Ruins are all that remains of the castle of Arima Harunobu, a Christian daimyo (feudal lord) of the Warring States Period. Harunobu was the founder of the Arima Seminario, the first European secondary education institution in Japan. (A seminario, or seminary, is a school of Christian theology. The Arima Seminario was equivalent to today's junior high schools.) The members of the Tensho Embassy, a group of Japanese youth who were sent to Rome, were selected from this school. Artifacts that have been excavated from the castle ruins include porcelain and china ware, which are evidence of trade, and gold-leafed roof tiles, which indicate a connection with Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Bungo Mori Roundhouse
Bungo Mori Roundhouse is a railway yard formally used for steam locomotives in Bungo Mori Roundhouse Park in Kusu-gun, Oita. Inside the park there is a railway museum, "Roundhouse Museum," designed by Kyushu cruise train designer Mr. Eiji Mitooka, that provides fun for adults and children alike. Bungo Mori Roundhouse was completed in 1934 along with the opening of all lines of the Kyudai Main Line. It played an important role as a relay point between Kurume and Oita. At its peak, it had 25 steam locomotives that carried over 5,000 passengers per day. Kusu flourished as a railway town. Also, in wartime, it became a base for military transportation and was even strafed by the U.S. military. There are still bullet holes in the walls from that incident.

Tenryo Hita mameda-machi
Built as a castle town when Mitsuuji Ogawa built Maruyama Castle in 1601, "Mameda-machi" became Tenryo (under direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate) from the early Edo period, and prospered as the center of economic and cultural development in Kyushu. The village of Shiiba-son in Higashiusuki-gun, Miyazaki, is one of Japan’s three major hidden scenic spots. It has numerous sightseeing spots such as the Tsurutomi Yashiki residence and Shiiba Itsukushima Shrine. The warriors of the Heike Clan, who had fled to the area after their resounding defeat at the hands of the rival Genji Clan in the 12th century, sought refuge and lived in Shiiba-son. Tsurutomi Yashiki was the site of a tragic love story between Daihachiro Munehisa Nasu of the Genji Clan and Princess Tsurutomi of the Heike Clan. It is said that Shiiba Itsukushima Shrine was built in sympathy for the remnants of the once-mighty Heike Clan. Today, the shrine still watches over the village, answering prayers for traffic safety and protection against misfortune.

Amano Iwato Shrine
Amano Iwato Shrine, famous for the wishing stone stacks of Amano Yasugawara, is located in the town of Takachiho in Nishiusuki-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture. Known as a power spot of Miyazaki, Amano Iwato Shrine attracts many people seeking "goshuin" (shrine red seals) and amulets. This is the land of the legend of Amano Iwato, which is found in the chronicles of Japanese mythology, Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. The shrine complex has two main shrines, Nishi-Hongu and Higashi-Hongu, both of which are dedicated to the sun goddess, Amaterasu Omikami. The object of worship of Nishi-Hongu is the cave in which Amaterasu Omikami hid herself away.
