Customers with Medical Requirements

Please inform us if you need any medical assistance.

During the flight, the air inside the cabin becomes drier, thinner and the pressure becomes lower than on the ground which is equivalent to the condition in the mountains at an elevation of 2,000-2,500 meters. Please check Safety Information / Tips for a Comfortable Flight for further information.

Depending on the nature of your ailment and injury, such cabin conditions may affect your health. Therefore prevent you from flying, please consult your physician in advance.
Moreover, please read MEDIF / Guide for the Physician, and if any of the medical conditions listed applies to you, please contact ANA Disability Desk or Reservation Center.


When you make a reservation, please inform us what type of assistance you require.

You may need a doctor's certificate.

Customers with certain symptoms, usage of medical equipments, and other special conditions may require a doctor's certificate (Medical Information Form "MEDIF") stating that you are fit to travel by air.

ANA staff and our cabin crew members are not permitted to assist with feeding or personal hygiene and lavatory functions. For those customers requiring such assistance, it is required to have an escort.
Customers requiring a stretcher or an infant incubator and customers whose doctor has noted that an escort is required must have an escort with them. Please contact us if you have any queries on this matter.

We ask for the following customers to contact us.

  • Customers requiring an Oxygen Cylinder and/or Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) on board. (The customer must have a signed medical certificate (MEDIF) by doctor verifying that he/she is fit to fly)
  • Customers requiring other medical devices on board
  • Customers requiring a Stretcher (*1)
  • Customers requiring an Incubator (*2)
  • Customers who may need other kind of special medical treatments on board
  • Group tour customers including more than 10 people who require special assistance

In case of *1, *2, or with an advice from a medical doctor, customers must be escorted by a doctor, nurse, or a person approved by the doctor.

Medical Equipments

If you use medical equipments and other devices on board

Customers requiring the following equipment, please contact us beforehand.

Passengers with the following medical treatments are not required to contact us beforehand. If you have any concerns or uncertainties regarding your boarding, please feel free to contact us.

If you are using medical oxygen cylinders

Oxygen cylinders are considered as hazardous items and therefore may only be brought on board for medical purposes. A medical certificate (MEDIF) is required for on-board usage of an oxygen cylinder.
In addition, the person using the cylinder must be fully knowledgeable in its use or must board with an escort who is also knowledgeable in its use.


Personal Medical Oxygen Cylinders

Your oxygen cylinder must meet the following requirements:

  • 1. It must be an approved cylinder and labeledan approved labeled
  • 2. It must be gaseous oxygen for medical purposes, labeled "O2."
  • 3. It must have passed a stress test within the last 3 years (5 years for some cylinders).

A personal medical oxygen cylinder no more than 70cm X 10cm, and weigh no more than 5kg per device (under regulation of Civil Aeronautic Lax) is allowed on board.
Please prepare a tube long enough to allow you to use the cylinder as it should be stowed laying down under the seat in front of you. We may ask you to remove the carrier from the cylinder so that it can be stowed under the seat.
In case the cylinder cannot be stowed under the seat, the passenger will be asked to purchase another seat to place the cylinder.

Oxygen cylinders to be brought on board need to be checked for specifications in advance, so please be sure to contact ANA Disability Desk. Please be sure to use the Oxygen Cylinder Checklist (PDF file) as well.

  • The following items are considered dangerous and can neither be brought aboard nor checked-in as a baggage.
    Portable oxygen cans, oxygen packs for sports, and liquid oxygen
  • For ANA flights operating in the US, where regulations prohibit the carry and use of personal oxygen cylinders, in-flight rentals are required.

Oxygen Cylinder Rentals (Charged)

Japan Domestic Flights
■Reservation: 48 hours prior to departure
■Cost: ¥3,000 per flight
■Capacity: 400 litters
Oxygen flow setting can be adjusted in the range of 0.25 -6.0 liters per minute.

International Flights
■Reservation: 96 hours prior to departure
■Cost: ¥10,000 per cylinder
■Capacity: 360 litters
Oxygen flow setting can be adjusted in the range of 0.25 -5.0 liters per minute.

The number of Rental Oxygen Cylinders will be prepared according to the amount of oxygen required by passengers as stated by the physician on the MEDIF.

Oxygen cylinders originally equipped on board are for emergency purposes, and are not used normally.

If you are bringing medical electronic equipments

Some equipment including those that emit electric waves while in use, specific battery types, or other equipment listed in the dangerous articles may not be carried nor used on board.
Please contact ANA Disability Desk in advance and inform us of the name of the medical equipment, product and manufacturer, as well as model number, size and the type of battery.


Customers using Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC), artificial respirator, and other medical equipments on board require a Medical Electronic Equipment's Checklist. For more information, please inquire ANA Disability Desk.

The power outlets on the plane do not guarantee the provision of stable power. They should not be used for medical equipment that may affect the health condition of customers.

We recommend customers to prepare batteries for use with medical equipment, especially who uses Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) and Respirator, to bring enough batteries power to last for 150% of the expected flight time.

If you bring in oversized medical equipment that cannot be stored under the front seat, you will need to purchase another ticket for the seat. Please refer to the “Information Regarding Carry-on Baggage (Japan domestic flights / International flights)” for more information on size of baggage to bring on board.

* Defibrillators (AED) may be equipped with scissors; however, they are restricted items which you cannot bring on board.

Bringing Insulin Syringes (injection needles), Epinephrine Autoinjectors on board

Insulin syringes and epinephrine autoinjectors are allowed to bring and use in the cabin. Any other autoinjectors are also allowed in case you need to use them according to your doctor's prescription.

Please inform the security check staff that you have medical syringes (injection needles).
While you can bring medical syringes on board without showing a doctor's note, we recommend you to prepare a document explaining the purpose of the treatment (medical prescriptions, certificate from doctor, diabetic patient ID card, etc.) to go through the security check smoothly.
The standard may differ in foreign airports, according to the countries, so please be sure to inquire for the regulation through embassies or other corresponding organizations before departure.


(*)”Diabetic Patient ID Card” is issued by Japan Diabetics Association. Please check the website of Japan Diabetics Association(in Japanese) .

  • ■We do not accept keeping or refrigerating of vaccines. Please be sure to bring along an insulating container with you if in need of one.
  • ■Please do not leave used medical syringes (injection needle) in the cabin, and be sure to bring them with you to dispose them properly.
  • ■If bringing and using blood glucose level measuring instruments on board, please read " If you are bringing medical electronic equipment"

Cardiac Pacemakers (or Implantable Defibrillators) or Metal Implants Inside the Body

There is no need to contact beforehand for they do not affect flights. They may trigger screening equipment during security checks. Please inform the security staff in advance by presenting a certificate or other documents. If you do not have any certificates with you, please explain to the security staff beforehand. If you take an international flight, we recommend you to prepare an English translation of the certificate. Moreover, for usage of electronic devices near customers with pacemakers, please read “Restrictions on the Use of Electric Devices On Board”.

If Wearing Ostomates

Ostomy equipments can, but scissors are considered as restricted items and cannot be brought on board. Please prepare pre-cut supplies.
