Hydrangeas of Unsho-ji Temple in Oga

Hydrangeas of Unsho-ji Temple in Oga in Akita Prefecture selected as one of the "Breathtaking sights in the world that I want to see before I die"
Grown painstakingly by the temple's head priest over 15 years, the hydrangeas paint the entire temple with blue blossoms during the peak season, which is generally in late June. You can enjoy the beautiful hydrangeas at their best against a backdrop of the blue ocean from mid-June to early July.
Oga Onsenkyo Village
Located 4 kilometers away from Unsho-ji Temple is Oga Onsenkyo Village, which was a favorite place of the Satake clan of Akita Prefecture, while serving as "Toji," or a hot spring town where people spent a long period of time for the purpose of recovery. The waters of the hot springs of Oga Onsenkyo Village are slightly salty and prevent the body from feeling cold after taking the bath while also promoting beautiful skin with a high moisturizing effect. Another attraction of the village is the seafood delicacies that are served by respective ryokan inns. Don't miss the exquisite local specialty "Ishiyaki" dish prepared by putting red-hot rocks into a wooden bucket filled with a hot water broth in which fresh seafood is boiled.
Namahage drum performance
Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset, Oga's Namahage is a kind of ogre portrayed by men wearing masks and a traditional costume who make the rounds of houses in the region on New Year's Eve every year. Namahage Daiko Drumming is a new yet old performing art unique to Oga that combines Namahage and Japan's traditional wadaiko drums. Held in Oga Onsenkyo Village from spring through autumn, the live Namahage drum performance is full of energy and power through which audiences can feel the history of the culture of Oga.
