As part of its initiatives aimed at realizing a decarbonized society, ANA is progressively transitioning its ground support vehicles (GSE), including baggage cargo trucks, to electric vehicles.
ANA has launched a new initiative to explore the potential for electrifying GSE operations across a variety of operating environments. The two test sites selected for the initiative were Haneda Airport, Japan’s largest hub airport with more than 1,200 flights per day at intervals of just over one minute, and New Chitose Airport, known for its extremely cold and snowy winter conditions. In February 2026, ANA began verification trials aimed at establishing operational frameworks optimized for each site at these two airports, both of which demand exceptionally high levels of operational precision and responsiveness.
We spoke with Mr. Nakamura of the Airline Infrastructure Procurement Team in the Procurement Department, who played a leading role in the initiative.
With the initiative now fully underway at both locations, we asked him about the vision behind the project as well as the operational insights gained so far in the field.
One of the challenges facing airport decarbonization efforts was the lack of sufficient verification surrounding the electrification of truck-based vehicles, which account for approximately 1,000 vehicles operating within airports.
To address this, ANA entered into a verification partnership with Isuzu Motors, and on February 18, 2026, introduced EV baggage transport trucks at both Haneda and New Chitose Airports.
Although the reduction in CO₂ emissions varies depending on how the electricity is generated, when focusing solely on emissions from the vehicle itself, replacing one conventional diesel-powered vehicle at Haneda Airport with an equivalent EV is expected to reduce diesel fuel consumption by approximately 760 liters annually, based on the annual average diesel consumption of the same type of vehicle used prior to electrification.
This is estimated to correspond to an annual reduction of approximately two tons of CO₂ emissions.
Isuzu Motors proposed a special truck livery as a way to raise awareness of the joint initiative undertaken by the two companies.
From among 12 designs created by an Isuzu Motors designer following on-site visits to the airport, ANA selected the design that best combined ANA branding with clear visual identification as an EV.

The vehicles can be used in the same way as conventional engine-powered vehicles, and we have experienced no issues in either operations or driving performance.
Currently, most vehicles used at the airport are either conventional engine-powered or hybrid vehicles, which inevitably produce exhaust emissions.
Since the newly introduced vehicles are powered entirely by batteries, no exhaust emissions are produced. We feel this contributes not only to the environment, but also to the health of employees working on-site.
Although only three EV trucks were introduced as part of this project, the Procurement Department aimed to make it more than a simple vehicle procurement exercise. Through collaboration with Isuzu Motors and relevant internal departments, the team focused on creating additional value wherever possible.
With Isuzu Motors serving as a verification partner, ANA will continue exploring solutions to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions across its approximately 1,000 truck-based GSE vehicles, not only through electrification, but through every available approach.
