Rail

AirTrain and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)

John F. Kennedy International Airport to central Manhattan

  • Stations: Take the AirTrain from the station at any terminal, from Jamaica Sta. take the LIRR to Pennsylvania Sta. or Grand Central Sta. in central Manhattan. From there, you can get to your hotel by Subway or taxi, etc. For the AirTrain, you pay at the ticket gate after arriving at Jamaica Sta.
  • Time required: About 40 minutes (to Pennsylvania Sta. or Grand Central Sta.)
  • Fares: $13.25 to $20.50 ($8.50 for the AirTrain and $8.25 to $11.25 for the LIRR) These are for contactless payment by credit card or smart device. If you do not pay by any of those methods, an additional $1 will be charged for Metro Card. LIRR has CityTickets, flat fee tickets for $5 or $7.
  • Time required: AirTrain operates 24 hours (5- to 30-minute intervals). LIRR does not run frequently in the early morning or late night, so it is not recommended to use it from a safety perspective.

AirTrain and Subways A, E, J, and Z

John F. Kennedy International Airport to Manhattan Subway stations

  • Stations: You can take the AirTrain from the station at any terminal then transfer to the Subway at the next Subway station to get to the city. Take Subway A for Howard Beach and change at Howard Beach-JFK Airport Sta. Or take Subway E, J, or Z for Jamaica and change at Jamaica Sta. (The Subway station name is Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport Sta.)
  • Time required: 60 to 90 minutes (depending on your destination)
  • Fares: $11.15 ( $8.25 for the AirTrain and $2.90 for the Subway)
  • Operating hours: AirTrain operates 24 hours (5- to 30-minute intervals). The Subway also operates 24 hours (4- to 60-minute intervals). The Subway does not run frequently in the early morning or late night, so it is not recommended to use it from a safety perspective.

Taxi

  • Pickup location: From one of the official taxi stops in front of the terminal. There will be NYC Taxi staff there.
  • Time required: 40 to 60 minutes (depending on the destination or on traffic conditions)
  • Fare: About $90 (Airport to Manhattan flat fare is $70 plus extra charges such as road toll charge and taxes. Tips are separate and are about 15 to 20% of the fare. You may be charged an additional $5 during peak hours that are 16:00 to 20:00 on weekdays)
  • Operating hours: 24 hours a day
  • You can also use rideshare apps on your smartphone, like Uber, Lyft, etc.The pickup location varies by terminal, but generally, follow the "Ground Transportation" signs after exiting the terminal and request a ride at the "Ride App Pick Up" location.
