This page contains information on the restrictions in place for all routes. The items listed here can be placed inside carry-on baggage or checked baggage as long as certain conditions are met.

  • ・If a codeshare flight or flight operated by another airline is included in the itinerary, the baggage rules of the other airline may apply.
  • ・When traveling on Japanese domestic sectors using a ticket for which the International Conditions of Carriage apply, the baggage rules for international flights will apply.
  • ・Please be advised that in the event that it is impossible to confirm whether or not an item can be transported by airplane before the departure time, the request for transport may be rejected.
  • ・Some countries and regions may place restrictions on the carry-on and check-in of items other than those mentioned below.

Handling of Lithium Battery-powered Lighters
  • * Only the following lithium batteries may be carried on board: Lithium-metal batteries with a lithium content of 2 g or less, and lithium-ion batteries with a watt-hour rating of 100 Wh or less.
  • * Please do not charge such lighters inside the aircraft.
  • * Take the necessary measures to prevent accidental activation of the heat producing component.
  • * Wrap spare batteries individually to prevent short-circuiting.

Lighters Not Permitted for Check-in or Carry-on

  • * Lighters with oil tanks not containing absorbent material (excluding liquefied gas), cigar lighters, premixing burner lighters (turbo lighters, jet lighters, lighters producing a blue flame etc.), pistol-shaped lighters, and torch lighters cannot be checked in or carried on board.
  • * Lighter fuel and refills (gas/oil) are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.
  • * Lithium battery-powered lighters that do not have a function to prevent accidental activation are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Sprays Permitted for Carry-on and Check-in

Non-radioactive Cosmetics and Medicine/Medicinal Products (Including Hairsprays); and Spays for Sporting Equipment and Daily Use (Excluding Those Containing Flammable and Poisonous Gases)

For cosmetics (hairsprays or antiperspirant sprays), medicine/medicinal products (sterilization/disinfection sprays or cooling sprays), and sprays for sporting equipment and daily use (excluding those containing flammable and poisonous gases), 2 kg or 2 liters per person are permitted to be checked in or carried on board in containers of up to 0.5 kg or 0.5 liters.

  • * Sprays must have their valve secured by a cap or other adequate method to prevent the content from accidentally leaking out.
  • * When checking in non-radioactive cosmetics or drugs and sprays for sporting equipment or daily use together, their combined amount must not exceed 2 kg or 2 liters.
  • * Even if an alcoholic beverage is within the carry-on limits permitted by the regulations, it may not be possible to bring it on board depending on restrictions imposed on the carry-on of liquids for international flights. General Electronic Devices with Built-in or Attached Lithium Batteries

Handling differs depending to the watt-hour rating (Wh).

Cell phones, battery chargers for cell phones, wireless radios, transceivers, laptop computers, digital cameras, mobile terminals, portable copiers, printers, hand-held terminals, electronic book readers, mobile game devices, camera equipment, etc.

  • * Electric vehicles (hoverboards, electric skateboards, self-balancing scooters, etc.) are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board due to safety reasons.
Electronic Device

Lithium-metal batteries containing no more than 2 g of lithium and lithium ion batteries with a watt-hour rating of no more than 160 Wh can be checked in or carried on board.

  • * Turn off the power of the device completely. (Sleep mode is not allowed.)
  • * Please protect the device by packing it in a sturdy suitcase or thick fabric. (To prevent fires from accidental operation or damage)
Spare Batteries

Lithium-metal batteries containing no more than 2 g of lithium and lithium ion batteries with a watt-hour rating of no more than 100 Wh can be carried on board. They are not permitted to be checked in.

Up to two lithium ion batteries with a watt-hour rating exceeding 100 Wh but of no more than 160 Wh can be carried on board. They are not permitted to be checked in.

  • * Battery chargers with a lithium ion battery for cell phones are handled as spare batteries.

Electronic Device

Lithium-metal batteries containing more than 2 g of lithium and lithium ion batteries with a watt-hour rating exceeding 160 Wh are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Spare Batteries

Lithium-metal batteries containing more than 2 g of lithium and lithium ion batteries with a watt-hour rating exceeding 160 Wh are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Short circuit prevention measures

Please take measures such as putting the batteries in their original retail packaging or insulating the terminals (taping over exposed terminals or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch).

Request for batteries in general

For safety reasons, passengers with spare batteries other than lithium-metal batteries and lithium ion batteries (such as nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium, and alkaline manganese batteries) should take the necessary steps to prevent them from short circuiting before taking them on board the aircraft.

Items with a non-removable lithium battery are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Smart baggage with a removable lithium battery can be checked in and carried on board.
The removed lithium battery should be carried on board. If you would like to carry smart baggage on board, please confirm the size and weight restrictions for carry-on baggage.

It will be possible to check in and carry on board lithium-metal batteries with a lithium content of 0.3 g or less and lithium-ion batteries with a watt-hour rating of 2.7 Wh or less. (This also includes non-removable lithium batteries.)

What is smart baggage?

Smart baggage refers to baggage containing integrated batteries, which allow for the charging of electronic devices and other functions.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Up to two batteries per person with a watt-hour rating (Wh) of no more than 160 Wh are allowed to be carried on board. They are not permitted to be checked in.

Up to one battery per person with a watt-hour rating (Wh) exceeding 160 Wh but of no more than 300 Wh is allowed to be carried on board. It is not permitted to be checked in.

Batteries with a watt-hour rating (Wh) exceeding 300 Wh are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

* Batteries installed in the main wheelchair body are not included in the spare batteries.
In order to safely transport your electric wheelchair, please remove all batteries.
When removing batteries, package them before boarding so that they will be protected against any impact.

Dry Batteries (e.g., nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium)

Up to one battery per person can be checked in. It is not permitted to carry them on board.

  • * Although quantity restrictions are not stipulated in the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's standards, ANA has implemented its own restrictions in accordance with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Wet Non-spillable Batteries

Up to one battery per person can be checked in. It is not permitted to carry them on board.

Wet Spillable Batteries

Spare batteries cannot be checked in or carried on board.

  • ・Carry-on: Permitted (personal use only)
  • ・Check-in: Not permitted

Out of consideration for other passengers, the use of electronic cigarettes, electronic pipes, electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, electronic nicotine delivery devices, and other smoking devices that do not use fire (including those that do not emit smoke) is also prohibited on board ANA Group-operated flights. In addition, the charging of electronic cigarettes and their spare batteries is also prohibited.

Handing of Lithium Battery-powered Electronic Cigarettes

  • ・Only the following lithium batteries may be carried on board: Lithium-metal batteries with a lithium content of 2 g or less, and lithium-ion batteries with a watt-hour rating of 100 Wh or less.
  • ・Take the necessary measures to prevent accidental activation of the heat producing component.
  • ・Wrap spare batteries individually to prevent short-circuiting.

Permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Gas hair curling irons and Hair Styling Tools

Gas hair curling irons and Hair Styling Tools

Gas hair curling irons and hair curlers filled with hydrocarbon gas, with a safety cover securely fixed to the heat source, can be checked in or carried on board.

* Up to 1 piece per passenger
* Refillable gas cartridges are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Battery-operated (cordless) hair curling irons and Hair Styling Tools

Gas hair curling irons and Hair Styling Tools

Battery-operated (cordless) hair curling irons and hair curlers with a removable battery can be checked in or carried on board.
* The removed lithium batteries are only permitted to be carried on board.

Battery-operated (cordless) hair curling irons and hair curlers with a non-removable battery are not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Up to five liters per person of alcoholic beverages with an alcoholic content exceeding 24% but no more than 70% are permitted to be checked in and carried on board.

  • * There are no restrictions on alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 24% or less.
  • * The alcoholic beverages must be stored in the container in which they were sold.
  • * Even if an alcoholic beverage is within the carry-on limits permitted by the regulations, it may not be possible to bring it on board depending on restrictions imposed on the carry-on of liquids for international flights. Up to 2.5 kg per person of items used for cooling perishable goods can be checked in or carried on board.

  • * Dry ice for other purposes than that above is not permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Ammunition for sports and hunting
Up to 5 kg including the package can be checked in per person. It is not permitted to carry them on board.

Solid type

Permitted to be checked in or carried on board.

Liquid/paste type

Liquid ski waxes that have a flashpoint of more than 60°C are permitted to be checked in and carried on board.
ANA cannot transport any liquid ski waxes for which the flashpoint cannot be confirmed.
Please bring a safety data sheet (SDS) or another document confirming the flashpoint along with the wax.

Sprays (Gases)

Please see the items under sprays.

Only one avalanche rescue backpack per person containing no more than 200 mg of gunpowder, and that uses neither a flammable nor toxic gas as compressed gas are allowed to be checked in or carried on board.

  • * The backpack must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated, and the airbags within the backpack must have pressure release valves.
  • * Please provide explanatory documents to prove that conditions are met.

Up to one life vest with small cylinders filled with carbon dioxide gas attached (two cylinders) per person, and up to two spare cylinders can be checked in or carried on board.

Battery-operated underwater torches (lights for scuba diving) or soldering irons, etc.
・ Items with their battery removed to prevent accidental operation during transport can be checked in or carried on board without restrictions.

  • * The removed lithium batteries are only permitted to be carried on board.
  • * Soldering irons with pointed ends are not permitted to be carried on board.

Transportation of experimental drugs

Experimental drugs in development can only be checked in or carried on board if the following conditions are met.
As it may take some time for the security check and necessary confirmation, please arrive at the airport with adequate time to spare.

[Conditions]

  • 1. The passenger has a document stating that it is an experimental drug.
  • 2. There is no “three-leaf mark” indicating that the drug is radioactive on the outer container.
  • 3. Security check standards (*) established in the Civil Aeronautics Act of Japan are met.
    • (*) Liquid experimental drugs need to undergo a liquid inspection or will be opened for inspection in order to allow them to be carried on board. Please note that if the container cannot be opened, the item may not be permitted to be checked in or carried on board.
  • 4. The quantity restrictions are 0.5 L or 0.5 kg per container, and 2 L or 2 kg per person.
