Coral Regeneration Project

The coral of Okinawa is being damaged by threats such as chlorosis caused by the rising temperature of seawater and mass propagation of the coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish. The ANA Group has joined with businesses in Okinawa and other prefectures to form an industry-government project called Team Tyura Sango. It has been working since 2004 to protect and regenerate the coral reef community near Onnason, Okinawa.

Specifically, volunteer divers emplaced coral polyps cultured at facilities on land, twice in spring and twice in autumn during the fiscal year 2012. To date, more than 2,025 volunteer divers have participated.

The polyps placed through these ongoing preservation activities are now growing on their own in small coral formations and are reproducing. Through this project, the ANA Group is sharing its commitment to a clean ocean with many people.
