This page provides information on carrying musical instruments on board international flights. Musical instruments (guitars, violins) can also be checked in, but depending on their size, additional charges will apply.
If a codeshare flight or flight operated by another airline is included in the itinerary, the baggage rules of the other airline may apply.
Please be advised that in the event that it is impossible to confirm whether or not an item can be transported by airplane before the departure time, the request for transport may be rejected.
Musical instruments can be checked in within the limits of the free baggage allowance.
If the free baggage allowance is exceeded, an excess baggage charge will incur.
However, the handling if the size (total linear dimensions) is exceeded differs to normal baggage.
Please notify ANA by phone in advance about baggage with total linear dimensions that exceed 203 cm (80 in.). Please contact ANA at your earliest convenience as the confirmation may take some time.
| Size | Handling |
|---|---|
| 158 cm (62 in.) to 203 cm (80 in.) | Excess baggage charge for oversize baggage is waived. Restrictions due to aircraft type and flight route will apply (*1). |
| 203 cm (80 in.) to 292 cm (115 in.) | Excess Baggage Charges (*2) and restrictions due to aircraft type and flight route will apply (*1). |
| Exceeding 292 cm (115 in.) | Cannot be checked in. |

Free number of baggage items exceeded by one
JPY 20,000 (exceeding allowed number of items)
Excess baggage charge = JPY 20,000
The currency and fee applied vary depending on the itinerary, the sector on which baggage is checked in, as well as the airport at which the payment is made. For details, please refer to Excess Baggage Charges.
Information For Customers Who Wish to Carry On Excess Baggage
When the allowable size for carry-on baggage is exceeded, you will need to purchase an additional seat.
Customers who wish to carry a double bass on board an aircraft must make a reservation for Economy Class.
Please contact ANA by phone for details.
Please check the examples of how large musical instruments, such as a double bass, must be secured to a seat when carried in the cabin.
Double Bass Securing Procedure
Note: Solid lines (dark) indicate the front and dotted lines (light) indicate the back.
Raise the armrests between the seats and place the double bass onto the seats.
Attach two extension belts to the seat belt on the right side of Seat G. Pass them from the front to the back of the double bass, and fasten them to the left side of Seat F (marked in Red).
Attach two extension belts to the seat belt on the left side of Seat G. Pass them from the back to the front of the double bass, loop them underneath, and fasten them to the right side of Seat F (marked in Blue).
Wrap the seat belt on the right side of Seat E around the neck of the double bass once and fasten it to the left side of Seat E (marked in Yellow). Follow the same procedure for Seat D, wrapping the right-side belt around the neck and fastening it to the left side (marked in Green).
Note: The double bass may also be positioned in the opposite direction.
Use blankets as padding to protect the instrument where it comes into contact with the seat belt buckles, the seat cushion, or the backrest.
